The systematic assault on public space has been recognized by critical urbanists as a strategic element of neoliberal urbanism. This book extends such analyses by examining the contemporary evolution of the neoliberal security regime in the cities of Europe and North America. It provides an incisive, if deeply disturbing, portrait of the new forms of social control and security that are being deployed against diverse populations, from the urban poor, the homeless and sports fans to anti-G8 protesters. But, as the contributors to the book demonstrate, these new forms of power and control over urban space have also provoked new forms of resistance as local, national and transnational social movements unsettle the market authoritarianism of the global neoliberal (dis)order. This book represents a major contribution to our understanding of the contemporary urban condition. It will be essential reading for analysts concerned to decipher the causes and consequences of neoliberalized urbanization.
