Eric Töpfer: Video Surveillance as Crime Prevention? Appeal to Change the Perspective ERIC TÖPFER: VIDEO SURVEILLANCE AS CRIME PREVENTION? APPEAL TO CHANGE THE PERSPECTIVE

By: Eric Töpfer

What follows is the english abstract of a paper which in its german version will appear in Kriminologisches Journal 4, 2009.

Evaluation studies on the crime effects of CCTV show weak results. Is the operation of video surveillance, hence, only symbolic policy? The article argues against this assumption that the actual practices of surveillance need to be kept studied.

As an instrument of lean policing and for the storage of data CCTV is increasing power for repressive purposes – in particular when operated in the context of thickening surveillance webs.

If you are intersted in a long english version AND if you have funds for translation available, drop us a note ;-)
