FRED SEAVEY: GLOBALIZING LABOR IN RESPONSE TO A GLOBALIZED SECURITY INDUSTRY

Through mergers and acquisitions, the private security industry has become increasingly consolidated across the globe. Today, the six largest private security companies control approximately 20% of the global security market. Meanwhile, labor conditions among private security workers have become increasingly precarious. How can labor respond to an increasingly powerful and globalized security industry?

This presentation describes efforts by various unions and their international network, Union Network International, to create transnational strategies for improving the lives of security officers.

Fred Seavey is currently based in Hamburg. He is the research coordinator for the Service Employees International Union's (SEIU) international organizing team. He has worked for SEIU United Healthcare Workers West, an SEIU affiliate with 140,000 members, for the past 10 years, where he has helped to wage public campaigns to win improvements for workers in the health care industry. He also has worked on international and community development issues in Latin America and the United States. Seavey has a Bachellor's degree in Political Science and a Master's degree in International Development and Urban Planning.
