Jens Sambale / Volker Eick 2005: Das Berliner Ghetto - ein Missverständnis JENS SAMBALE / VOLKER EICK 2005: DAS BERLINER GHETTO - EIN MISSVERSTÄNDNIS

By: Jens Sambale & Volker Eick

Recent events (fall 2005) around Paris and France in general triggered a curious interest in Berlin-based journalists from the anglo-saxon press: Why, they started asking, is this not happening in Berlin, particulary in the inner city's immigrant districts?

Cover of the booklet (german)

This was started by the burning of five cars in the neighborhood of Moabit (this is the marketing dept.'s wet dream: Burn five cars and have the international press all over you).

See for example the

International Herald Tribune,

The Financial Times,

TIME,

San Francisco Chronicle,

New Republik and others (these links will probably not last long).

Most of these articles are much better than those published by the german press. Still, there is much confusion concerning the ghetto in Germany. In a recently published article we look at the valitidy of ghetto formation in Germany. We wrote this in August, not anticipating the french riots.
